Our top tips to ease renovation confusion

When it comes to the renovation process, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of colours and finishes and overlook and overlooking the highly important questions that need to be addressed before you renovate.

To get the best renovation result there is so much to consider before you can even start renovating your bathroom, and it’s easy to get bogged down by the nitty-gritty details involved, from the processes and trade schedules to budgets and materials – even a seasoned renovator can be left overwhelmed by the journey.

Before you take the plunge into your bathroom renovation, we have 4 essential tips to ease the confusion around bathroom renovations and ensure all your renovation dreams come true.

You need to set a budget

It’s important to identify how much you are willing to invest before you start on your renovation journey. In a high-value space such as a bathroom, costs can easily start to blow out of control, so when setting your budget you should take into consideration not only the value of your property, but also the size of your space and the quality of fixtures and fittings you want to include.

Working with a budget will help to narrow down decisions you will need to make, and although it can be tempting to get carried away, remember not to extend your budget greater than it’s worth, particularly when you’re renovating to sell. As a rule of thumb always allow for a 5-10% contingency so you’re prepared for any unforeseen expenses that can pop up when renovating.

Deciding on a design style shouldn’t be taken lightly as it will be one of the most significant decisions you make. You and your family (or potential buyers) will live with this style for many years to come, so there is great importance placed on getting a style that’s best suited to your lifestyle as well as a style that won’t quickly date.

A lot us lead hectic lives and do not have the time to be constantly deliberating between a variety of styles and colours nor we do we have the expertise to actually know what is going to work for our homes. Our team of experts at Batch have carefully curated four on-trend interior design styles which has all the tiles, cabinetry fixtures and fittings all handpicked by interior designers to save you a lot of frustration and streamline the decision-making process. You don’t need to change everything

If your bathroom layout functions well for you, and it’s just the aesthetics of the bathroom that needs an upgrade then don’t feel compelled to change it all. There are savings to be made by keeping your shower, toilet and vanity and plumbing in it’s original position.

When upgrading your fixtures and fittings changing to a frameless shower screen, upgrading to a new vanity unit with more storage, replacing those outdated tiles and switching to modern chrome or black tapware can make a great difference to the visual appeal and functionality of the space as well as having a positive impact on potential buyers too. You don’t have to completely change the way your bathroom functions.

You need to plan for the future

No bathroom renovation should begin without considering who the space is for and how that space will be used.  An ensuite is going to be used differently than a shared kids bathroom for example. If you have a family, remember the requirements for the bathroom will change over time. Depending on your individual family’s needs – evenings may revolve around bath time at first, so floor space might be top of the priority list, however as your kids become older adequate vanity storage and power points will have greater importance.

A list of ‘must-haves’ is a great place to start, to consider the use of the space as well as your current and future living situations.
